Nintendo has revealed the 1st quarter for the fiscal year ending March 2021, which indicates a whopping increase of 428% in operating profit year-over-year, climbing from 27.4 billion Yen in the year-ago quarter to 144.7 billion yen.
This spectacular financial result is yielded from the game of the year: Animal Crossing.
From the financial report, 10.63 million units of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been sold over last quarter, bringing total cumulative sales to 22.40 million units since it launched.
Even though this is the “sell-in” copies figure, which includes copies shipped to retailers but not sold to customers yet, this figure is still good enough to put the game in the second best-selling Switch title in the console’s history, following the Mario Kart8, which sold 26.74 million copies.
It is expected that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will become the best-selling Switch game soon as the game achieved 22.40 million units sold within half a year, and Nintendo estimates the sales will exceed 20 million units by the end of June globally.
For Switch, the game console, the total sales figures since launch has reached 61.44 million units, meaning it is quickly closing in on the NES, which sold a grand total of 61.91 million units.
The best-selling game console from Nintendo is Wii, which achieved a 101.63 million units sold since its launch. In the long term, it is possible Switch will surpass the Wii in terms of lifetime sales.
